Geeta pawar

Mumbai | Age: 30

A person lives in Mumbai and the story is about a girl who has struggled right from she was born to herteenager. The story is about a girl from Mumbai who has pursued her dream by tackling severe issues within the familyas well as the society's norms & culture. A girl who represented the National in sports and became anentrepreneur. It was the day she was born into a happy family but within an hour she was adopted by a family relative butnot in a legal way. Unfortunately, it was her mother who had not even seen her child's face properly after birthbut was ready to hand over the child to the relative. Though the whole intentions was never discovered by herparents, it silently revealed that the parents agreed to surrender to the relative because of the birth of a girlchild. Relatives brought the child to their house and start living but didn't do any legal agreement with the realparents of child. Relative means new parents who adopted a child were extremely happy as they didn't have achild since they married due to the some superstition as rumors in the family. It was very surprising for newparents that after a year, the woman got conceived and gave birth to a girl child and now the family had 2 girlchildren in the house. Now the adopted girl gets to meet her new younger sister within the family.Like many girls, she was also brought up in one of the slums located in Sewree, Mumbai where not manyparents from the community are not even convinced to send their girls for primary or higher education andleast bother about sending for any sports. Secondly, people from the communities used to think twice to sendsports or education, because they are much more focused on their daily earning source and getting a threetimes meals to feed their family.New parents of a girl somehow fed their children with the income generated through driving and sent them toschool but soon after, the child’s ( her) father passed away due to a heart attack when the adopted girl wasonly 7 years old. However, both girls didn’t even overcome their father’s death, another drawback took placeand both lost their mother too who died because of kidney failure. She wasn't able to overcome all situations and was unfocused from her studies but the only time she used tofeel freshened up or diverted from all stress is when she saw a few boys playing Kabaddi every day in school. She decided to make her career in the sports sector but as usual and very common being girls she wasn'tallowed by her uncles who used to take care of both girls after their parent’s death. Their cousin's brotherused to keep an eye on both girls to make sure they shouldn't take part in sports activities anyhow but sheused to lie to her uncles and continued the kabaddi despite the knowledge of her cousin's brother. There was so much gossip that took place about her wearing short paint. The gossip slowly reached her familymember that she used to go for sports with boys and had gone out of control, not followed the culture, showedher body, made the embrace, provoked boys, etc.More and less, She understood that the community had that mindset where girls are meant to get married atan early age, do household work, and live life for others, where girls are controlled right from their childhoodto till they death. For example – when you are too small, you will be controlled by your parents, after that yourbrother, when you turn up into teenage, you will be controlled by your boyfriend, if you get married thenyouhusband, then your son or family, etc. But She has decided to break the barriers of orthodox practices, andculture and set an example for many girls, standing as a role model for many girls so that they shouldn’t facewhat she had faced in every step towards her future. She back-answered the family and went against them to continue playing kabaddi. She soon proved it in a fewmonths by herself selected to represent the National level from her school. Henceforth, she took many othersports at school. She also represented herself to build a human pyramid ( Dahi handi) in the US.She thought, now she can go ahead, play further but it got affected badly in her life. she had separated fromher family uncle y and started living with her sister in a rented house at the age of 18. She had to look for a jobto feed herself and also a responsibility as an elder sister to let her younger sister continue her education. She had a tough time finding a job and finally joined Magic Bus at 18 years as she was suggested by one of herKabaddi coaches wherein she has learned to teach football, and understood the basic aspect to work withchildren. The paid stipend helped her to bear the expenditure of her sister's education as well as to run thefamily by fulfilling basic needs like food, travel, clothes, etc. While working, she also filed a case against an uncle who illegally captured the house of her parents that shewon after regurlerly visit to the court, BMC, communities, etc.Later on, her interest in the sport took it to NAZ Foundation India Trust and joined to learn to teach netballand understood the concept of life skill delivery through netball. She also got motivated by looking at thosegirls who used to come for her session and she easily made them understand various issues, creatingawareness through sports. She was promoted in NAZ after seeing her continuous engagement, and dedicationto youth and got the post of Associate in Aath Kadam to manage the project where girls are provided differentactivities to make better decisions for their careers. She decided to restart her passion to play sports and also to continue my further higher education. Shestepped into playing Rugby as few of her friends used to play. She made her schedule playing rugby, continuing her job, studying, and workout to make herself fit.Within a year, she got nominated to play at the district level than the national level. Their biggest achievementwas when she became a National Rugby player in 2018Playing sports, she was easily able to relate her personal life as every position teaches us something that canbe linked. For example, being a defender, she had to face many of her opponent team, likewise in her life, thereare so many of them who come up with various reasons for her not playing but she faces them and I neverallow them to overpower her. Every lesson that she emphasizes in her life has come through sports likeCommunication skills, teamwork, respect, behaviors, discipline, confidence, etc.She also started providing fitness advice to many girls, and women and made demonstration videos to rehashat home. She has completed more than 16 marathons of 10ks to date.Within the organization as well as outside, She has been shown as good evidence that participation in sportscan help to break-down gender stereotypes, improve girls’ and women’s self-esteem and contribute to thedevelopment of leadership skills. In November 2019 she introduced an Event firm named 4Memoreis Event with her 3 friends with theobjective of organizing sports events. She started with the virtual event and did a few events for women, andfurther, she organized a live marathon #RangBirgangeRun more than 500 participants registered and able tobuild the network of individual from the running communities as well as business communities. She is willing to introduce various events that can be an opportunity for many girls, and women, and anothergender to create awareness of sports and its benefits in their life. She made up her mind to leave her job andstarted working full-time for her event firm. She was confident and believed that she could do something insports. In the month of July 2020, she gave a resignation from NAZ FOUNDATION always remembered whenevery friend, colleague, and senior staff wanted to convince her to stay at NAZ and not leave in such a criticalsituation.Though being an organizer for girls wasn't an easy step, especially when you have a lack of contacts/clients inthe market, she took her decision and initiated with a virtual marathon concept wherein she introducedStep2BActive project to reach out to non-runners, community people to encourage for daily exercise and behealthy. So she is able to reach out to more than 1500 participants across India.Further more, she organized Saviorthon Run in which more than 2000 participation in the year 2022 and2023 subsequently. Though she is not able to continue her further education but she gaind knowledge ofbusiness administration by doing the several responsibilities guided by her mentor Mr. Suraj Patro andlearned marketing, client relationship, event management, leadership, team building etc. which gave herimmence confidence to reach sponsors, vendors, running ambassadors etc. without any fear. She believe in learning and stepping into various job role to experience and achieve her gaols. Further she alsostarted a real estate consultancy firm and manage her daily schedule to make business in real estate as well asin event management.By looking at her accomplishment, her family members also appreciated and start believing that sports canalso bring change and there is a career in the sports industry as she used to post everything on Facebook. After her achievement, there are so many of them from the communities who always admire her success andwanted to see their daughter participate in sports. They all consider her as their daughter’s role model. For her a sport means a Life learning tool that has immense learning, it empowered her to fight for her rightand assist her to create an identity. Her message to all girls is to play any sport without having any expectations because it will teach yousomething that will reflect surely after a certain time period and you will realize it first and then others willbelieve in you.
